The Internal Revenue Service has announced federal tax relief for individuals and businesses in parts of Washington State affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that began on December 9, 2025.
Under an IRS disaster relief declaration tied to the FEMA disaster designation, affected taxpayers in designated counties now have extended time to meet federal tax obligations. These counties include Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, King, Kittitas, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Samish, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, Whatcom, and Yakima.
Key Relief Measures:
- New federal deadline: Most tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines originally due on or after Dec. 9, 2025, and before May 1, 2026, are now postponed to May 1, 2026.
- Applies to individual and business tax returns, estimated tax payments, and certain IRA/HSA contributions that would have been due during this period.
- Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns with due dates in early 2026 also qualify for the extension.
- The IRS will waive late-filing or late-payment penalties for affected taxpayers as long as actions are completed by May 1, 2026.
The IRS automatically applies this relief for taxpayers located in the covered disaster area. Those outside the area with disaster-related tax records may call the IRS Special Services number to request relief.
We are encouraging taxpayers to file timely as much as possible and keep in mind that this relief is available.
